Is SMP allowed in Islam?

The permissibility of SMP in Islam often depends on understanding the key differences between SMP and traditional tattoos. SMP penetrates only the superficial layers of the skin, unlike tattoos which deposit ink deeper into the dermis. This distinction is crucial because it affects how SMP is viewed in relation to Islamic principles.

Does SMP prevent wudhu or ghusl?

Because SMP only penetrates superficial skin layers, it does not create a barrier that prevents water from reaching the skin during wudhu (ablution) and ghusl (full body purification). This is a critical factor for Muslims observing their daily prayers and religious obligations.

Why is SMP viewed differently than a traditional tattoo?

SMP differs from traditional tattoos in several key aspects: depth of ink placement, permanence, and purpose. Tattoos are generally considered permanent and often involve deeper skin penetration, while SMP is a cosmetic procedure that fades over time and sits on the superficial skin layers. The pigment used in SMP is specifically designed for this purpose and to ensure it does not change colour like a traditional tattoo.

Why some scholars consider it allowed / potentially allowed?

Pro-SMP arguments usually revolve around:

  • SMP uses shallower pigmentation than conventional tattoos.  
  • The intent: if used to restore a natural look (hair loss, baldness, scars), rather than for vanity or to “change the creation of Allah.”  
  • If pigment does not prevent water reaching skin — meaning ablution remains valid — some consider it more like a medical treatment than a cosmetic tattoo.

 

Is Scalp Micropigmentation allowed in Islam?

There is a difference of opinion among scholars. Many scholars consider it not permissible if the pigment is injected deep like a tattoo. However, some allow it if it is shallow, safe, does not block water for wudu, and is used to treat hair loss or restore normal appearance rather than beautification.

Is SMP allowed if someone is bald or has lost hair due to illness?

Some scholars allow it in such cases because it is considered treatment, not beautification.

This is similar to fixing a defect, which Islam permits.
